Do you often leave conversations feeling emotionally exhausted, even when nothing stressful happened to you personally?

Many highly sensitive people absorb the emotions and energy of those around them so deeply that it becomes difficult to tell where someone else's feelings end and their own begin. While empathy can be a beautiful gift, it can also become overwhelming without the right tools.

If you've ever wondered how to stay compassionate without carrying everyone else's emotional weight, this free training offers a thoughtful place to begin.

In Being an Empath Today, psychiatrist Judith Orloff shares practical insights for understanding empathic sensitivity and developing healthier ways to navigate an emotionally demanding world.

What this resource is about

Being an Empath Today: Surviving and Thriving with the Gifts of Sensitivity is a free online event presented by psychiatrist, bestselling author, and empath educator Judith Orloff, MD, in partnership with Sound True.

The training introduces Judith's approach to understanding the empath experience. While the terms Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and empath are often used interchangeably online, Judith explains that empathy exists on a spectrum and that some people experience an unusually deep sensitivity to the emotions, moods, and energy of others.

Throughout the presentation, she explores how empaths can care deeply for others without becoming emotionally depleted themselves.

Topics discussed include:

  • what it means to be an empath
  • common traits of highly empathetic people
  • the relationship between empathy and sensitivity
  • recognizing emotional overwhelm
  • setting energetic and emotional boundaries
  • protecting yourself from emotional exhaustion
  • balancing compassion with self-care
  • thriving as an empath in everyday life

The session also introduces concepts from Judith Orloff's broader body of work, including her books and educational programs for empaths.

What you'll learn or gain

By attending this free training, you may:

  • better understand the characteristics of an empath
  • recognize patterns of emotional absorption
  • learn strategies for preventing emotional burnout
  • develop healthier emotional boundaries
  • feel less guilty about protecting your energy
  • gain practical self-care ideas for everyday life
  • discover additional resources for continued learning

Many participants find reassurance in realizing that deep empathy doesn't have to lead to chronic exhaustion.

Who it's for

This resource may be especially helpful for:

  • highly sensitive people who identify as empaths
  • people who frequently absorb the emotions of others
  • caregivers, therapists, coaches, and helping professionals
  • HSPs who struggle with emotional boundaries
  • anyone interested in learning more about empathic sensitivity

It's particularly well suited to readers who resonate with Judith Orloff's work on empathy and emotional wellbeing.

Key benefits

Here are a few reasons this resource stands out:

  • Free online training
  • Presented by psychiatrist and bestselling author Judith Orloff, MD
  • Focuses specifically on empathic sensitivity
  • Offers practical strategies for emotional self-care
  • Encourages healthy boundaries without losing compassion
  • Accessible to beginners exploring the empath experience
  • Introduces additional books and resources for deeper learning

One of its strengths is its compassionate approach. Rather than encouraging empaths to become less caring, Judith focuses on helping them remain open-hearted while protecting their own wellbeing.

Any limitations

It's worth noting that "empath" is not the same as the scientifically researched Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) trait developed by Dr. Elaine Aron.

While many people identify with both concepts, the HSP trait is based on research into Sensory Processing Sensitivity, whereas the concept of an empath is broader and is generally discussed within psychological, self-help, and spiritual contexts rather than being a formal scientific classification.

Because this is a free introductory event, it also serves as an overview of Judith Orloff's work rather than an in-depth training program. Participants who want more extensive instruction may wish to explore her books or paid courses afterward.

Finally, as with any educational resource, this training is not intended to replace professional mental health care when individualized support is needed.

Personal take

I appreciate that Judith Orloff gives language to an experience many sensitive people recognize immediately: feeling emotionally affected by the people around them.

At the same time, I think it's helpful to distinguish between being an empath and being a Highly Sensitive Person. Many HSPs relate strongly to Judith's teachings, but the two concepts aren't identical.

If you already identify as an HSP and find yourself absorbing other people's emotions to an overwhelming degree, this training offers practical ideas for protecting your energy while continuing to care deeply about others.
